Odyssey Theatre is seeking a creative artist as a Theatre Designer for part of our 38th season of theatre in Ottawa’s Strathcona Park. The Designer will draw largely from Odyssey’s existing stock to create costumes and a set for two performances this summer.

Odyssey is renowned for its award-winning productions that weave language with masked performance, Commedia dell’Arte, puppetry, music and culturally diverse forms of dance-theatre. From August 12-18, we are staging a creative arts (Myth, Lore and Stories of Wonder) fair to bring together artists, youth and diverse audiences to explore myth and legend through workshops, theatre, dance, story-telling and exciting community arts events.

The Designer will work with the Directors of two projects that part of our summer series:

  • Laurie Steven will be directing a workshop production of a new script, The Girl With No Hands;
  • Eleanor Crowder will be leading an environmentally staged performance by Odyssey’s young company at different locations throughout the park.

The Designer will work with the two Directors to develop a design concept for each of the two productions. They will draw largely on costumes, set pieces and masks from Odyssey’s stock, supplemented by purchased/rented items to create:

  • costumes and masks for the workshop and young company performances;
  • set pieces for the workshop production; and,
  • a stage backdrop for the workshop and other performances on Odyssey’s outdoor stage.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Theatre design training and experience;
  • Experience creating sets or costumes;
  • Good organizational skills;
  • Positive, professional attitude;
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently;
  • Collaborative team player.
