COMMUNITY ARTS PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Odyssey Theatre is seeking a creative and dynamic Director to program a new community arts engagement series as part of our 38th season of theatre in Ottawa’s Strathcona Park. 

Odyssey is renowned for its award-winning productions that weave language with masked performance, Commedia dell’Arte, puppetry, music and culturally diverse forms of dance-theatre. This summer we will stage CREATE! – a week long series designed to give people of all walks of life the opportunity to participate in the creation of theatre and the arts.

From August 12-18, 2024, CREATE! will provide exciting opportunities for professional artists, theatre enthusiasts and newcomers to work together.  The new series will feature music, dance, mask and puppet-making, crafts, processions, story telling and other arts events designed to encourage the participation of artists, youth, volunteers and the public in a celebration of the arts.

The Director will engage artists, groups and community organizations, particularly from underserved and equity-seeking members of the community. Working with the Artistic Director, they will plan, program and present the community arts engagement events in Strathcona Park.  They will collaborate with the Production Manager, General Manager and Marketing Director.

The ideal person is passionate about the arts, excited by community engagement and ideally has:

  • Experience planning and staging successful arts or community events;
  • An ability to network with diverse artists and community organizations to ensure participation from underserved and Equity-seeking groups;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • An ability to take initiative while working in a highly collaborative environment.

Dates and Pay

This is a contract position for 24 weeks from March 11 to August 20, 2024.   From March to July, the position is part-time for 10-20 hours per week.  In August, the position will be full-time and require some evenings and weekends.  Pay is $25 per hour based on actual hours worked.
