Do you love theatre and the magic of live performance? Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute to your community while promoting the arts? Odyssey has been enlivening Ottawa’s theatre scene for over 30 years bringing visual splendour, laughter and enormous enjoyment to our audiences.We provide exceptional creative and training opportunities for playwrights, actors, directors and production specialists.

We could not do it without dedicated volunteers who believe in and support our mission in a variety of ways. Whether you regularly have a few hours a month to be part of a committee or a block of time to work on a project or production, we have volunteer opportunities where you can make a contribution. We need specialists and technical skills, as well as enthusiasts ready to roll up their sleeves and help paint a set or sell tickets.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

We currently seek three or four individuals to join the Board of Directors as members of the Marketing Committee.Odyssey’s Board plays an active role in management and operations of the Theatre and supports all functions critical to ensuring the continued success of the Company. As a member of the Marketing Committee, you will have the opportunity to contribute in the following areas:

  • Developing a long-term marketing plan to support the growth of the Company both locally and nationally;
  • Brainstorming new and exciting strategies for promoting Odyssey’s Theatre Under the Stars;
  • Identifying media opportunities and facilitating contacts with the media to promote the Theatre;
  • Working alongside Board colleagues to operationalize marketing plans;
  • Evaluating the efficacy of marketing initiatives and using the assessment to develop future marketing plans; and,
  • Participating in Board meetings and contributing to the development and success of the Theatre.

Board of Directors and Board Committees
We are members of the community with a passion for the arts who embrace the challenge of nurturing a local professional theatre. The Board plays an active role in management and operations of the Theatre and supports all functions critical to ensuring the continued success of the Company. We are always looking for new members who can expand our range of expertise and capabilities. In addition to hands-on experience with the Theatre, Board members enjoy invitations to special behind-the-scene events, free admission to the summer program, and an opportunity to work alongside a great group of people.

The Commitment
The commitment for active members is about 10 hours per month. This includes a mix of Board and committee meetings, which are held to discuss, develop, and undertake the work of the Board across the various areas of oversight. These meetings occur as required and are project-oriented. We ask that you commit to a two-year term as a Board member, with the option to extend.

Fundraising Committee – Do you have experience or an interest in fundraising for charities, and enjoy developing creative strategies? We currently seek two individuals to join the Fundraising Committee, one of which would be as Chair. The committee will play a crucial role in helping to deliver the Company’s artistic vision and strategic plan, which includes improving the theatre facility in Strathcona Park and national touring of our work.

The Fundraising Committee will play a crucial role in helping to deliver the Company’s artistic vision and strategic plan, which includes improving the theatre facility in Strathcona Park, and national touring of our work. As a member of the Fundraising Committee, you will be asked to:

  • Develop strategies to raise funds to support exciting artistic plans of the Company;
  • Lead a process to identify potential donors and to develop an engagement strategy;
  • Research organizations that may benefit from being a part of the Theatre’s donor circle;
  • Draft compelling presentations for these organizations, and represent the Theatre to donors; and,
  • Participate in Board meetings and contribute to the success and development of the Theatre.

The Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate(s) would be dedicated, creative, and passionate about Odyssey’s Mandate. As a member or Chair of the Fundraising Committee, you would have previous experience or an interest in fundraising for charities, enjoy developing creative strategies, and/or a capacity to research and engage organizations with the goal of getting them involved in community organizations. Additionally, you would also possess:

  • Excellence in written and oral communications;
  • A passion for meeting new people and for talking about the Theatre and its goals; and,
  • Creativity in identifying and building a network of potential donors.

Board Recruitment and Nominating Committee – Do you have a background in human resources and recruitment, or experience with building teams to meet organizational objectives? As we enter an invigorating expansion program to ensure the Board can meet the needs of a growing company, we need seasoned individuals to help develop the Theatre’s Board.

Odyssey Theatre Seeks Nominating Committee Members

The Opportunity
We currently seek a talented candidate to join the Nominating Committee for the Board of Directors. This key committee is responsible for developing the Theatre’s Board to help position and support the growth of the Theatre.As a member of the Nominating Committee, you will have the opportunity to contribute in the following areas:

  • Identifying and recruiting talented new members to join the Board and/or its committees using new and existing channels;
  • Conceiving of, and implementing strategies to organize the Board around its objectives;
  • Setting the groundwork for the Board to grow in line with the Theatre’s plans for touring and facility development;
  • Advising the Board on issues relating to succession planning, organizational design, and human resources; and,
  • Participating in Committee meetings and contributing to the success and development of the Theatre.

The Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate(s) would be dedicated, creative, and passionate about the arts in Canada. As a member of this Committee, you would also have a background in management, human resources, and some experience with:

  • Developing and contributing to recruitment initiatives;
  • Current best-practises in recruitment, including the use of social media;
  • Conceiving of roles, and building teams to achieve organizational objectives; and,
  • Excellence in written and oral communications.

Front of House Operations – end of July till the end of August: sell tickets, usher, work concessions and help with daily venue set-up and cleanup.

Do you have good people skills and enjoy dealing with the public? We are looking for mature and friendly people to help us in our outdoor venue, Strathcona Park, by selling tickets, handing out programs and bug repellent, renting out cushions, selling refreshments, assisting with general set up and clean up, and providing customer support to audiences.Shifts for our main-stage show are typically in four-hour increments; Tuesday through Sunday 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm.Shifts for our Youth Matinee performances are August 8, 9, 10 from 9 am to 1 pm. Indoor space, which is within walking distance from the park will be used in case of rain or extreme heath.Volunteers who work a minimum of four shifts receive two complimentary tickets to our main-stage production.
Production Operations – end of June till the end of August: It takes a wide range of skills to mount our summer production – we need volunteers to build and paint sets, create theatrical props, sew costumes, hang lights and help with venue set-up and strike.

We are looking for people with carpentry skills, props creation or sewing/fixing costume pieces, in June and July as we create the show and during its run to the end of August.We also need help with painting the stage and the set, hanging lights, setting up bleachers and railings in mid-July. At the end of August, we need help taking down the set and technical set-up.Volunteers who work a minimum of 16 hours receive two complimentary tickets to our main-stage production.
Administration – year round: create newsletters, do mass-mailings, reach out to schools to promote our youth programs, contact businesses to request donations for our silent auction fundraiser, or assist with special events.

We are looking for people with a wide range of skills to help promote Odyssey Theatre. If you enjoy writing and editing, we can use your help with our newsletter and other communication documents. If you like the challenge of working on fundraising and special events, we need help with our annual fundraising beer-event and our annual garage sale. We also need volunteers for mundane but essential tasks like stuffing envelopes for mass mailings.
Special Skills – year round: photography, videography, IT and website support.

Masks, costumes, actors on stage and off – would you enjoy photographing and recording these colourful subjects? We are looking for a photographer and a videographer with their own equipment who can record and photograph our rehearsals, workshops and special events.Powerful visuals animate our website, but we are always looking for ideas to make it more interactive and user-friendly. Would you like to help us keep odysseytheatre.ca fresh and up-to-date and resolve occasional technical issues? The website is built on the WordPress platform.Would you like to use your IT skills in a performing arts environment? We work with Mac computers and occasionally need help with technical difficulties. We are looking for a volunteer we can call from time-to-time with IT-related questions.
