Odyssey Theatre is accepting applications to support the creation of new works by theatre artists and collectives on behalf of the Ontario Arts Council through the Recommender Grant for Theatre Creators Program. Odyssey welcomes applications from all professional writers and creators and encourages submissions from culturally diverse artists and collectives.

What is Odyssey Theatre looking for?

Odyssey will give priority to projects that incorporate one or more of the following:

  • A discipline related to physical theatre, including mask, Commedia dell’Arte, bouffon, clown, puppetry and dance-theatre;
  • Theatre forms from diverse cultural traditions;
  • Involves artists who have established skills in above areas;
  • Are innovative.

Program Eligibility

To be eligible for funding, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, an Ontario resident and a professional artist. For more information on program eligibility, please visit the Guide to OAC Project Programs.

The following are not eligible for this program:

  • Theatre organizations
  • Creation of non-theatre work
  • Productions costs, workshop costs and/or equipment costs
  • Works that have been completed prior to being notified by Odyssey
  • Submissions from artists who have outstanding reports from previously awarded OAC grants

How much can I apply for?

Applicants can request between $1,000 and $5,000.

Applications must be completed and submitted through NOVA, Ontario Arts Council’s online grant application system.

Please ensure that your application includes the following:

  • Basic information about the project
  • Your answers to application questions
  • Name of recommender you are applying to (Odyssey Theatre)
  • Script sample
  • C.V.

Proposals will be assessed and recommended based on the project’s quality, interest and artistic merit, as well as its contribution to disciplines related to physical theatre. Results will be announced in early 2019.
